September 1996 Monthly Report
Page 4
- Pride of the West Tailings
Status of this site has not changed from the 2nd quarter or
August monthly reports.
- Sunnyside Mine Pool Mitigation - Alkaline Solution Injection
This project was active throughout the month of September and
the quarter after startup on July 18th. Based on American
Tunnel bulkhead pH monitoring, lack of water and a water
rights "call" on the Animas River, the alkaline injection site
was switched from the Terry Tunnel to the secondary site in
Sunnyside Basin. Stream water was injected through the Terry
Tunnel bulkhead throughout the quarter with quantities varying
based on availability.
A total of 410.5 tons of hydrated lime was placed underground
during this period with 301.9 tons pumped through the Terry
Tunnel bulkhead and 108.6 tons injected through the secondary
site in Sunnyside Basin.
The American Tunnel bulkhead valve was closed as of September
9th after relaxation of the water rights "call" on the Animas
River. The mine pool pH was observed to rise as follows:
Date H
8/29/96 6.0
9/03/96 8.3
9/04/96 9.6
9/06/96 9.8
9/07/96 11.7
9/09/96 11.8
9/27/96 12.2
valve closure
Through the end of September, 31.6 million gallons of water
were pumped into the mine pool. During that same period, a
total of 40.6 millon gallons were released from the American
Tunnel bulkhead to evaluate the transport and mixing of
alkaline material within the mine pool and to comply with the
Animas River water rights "call ".
Quarterly progress pictures have not been included for this
project because they are identical to those previously
submitted.
