September 1996 Monthly Report
Page 3
1) the Koehler portal has been opened, a concrete coffer dam
poured to divert portal water into a pipeline and an 8"
drisco pipe placed to divert the captured water around
the Koehler mine dump and the pond at the toe of the
dump.
2) the placement of an extension pipeline on the Longfellow
portal drain line to divert this portal flow around the
pond at the toe of the Koehler dump.
3) the placement of downstream sediment controls. This
consisted of a series of hay bale sediment traps placed
in the drainage.
4) the placement of temporary ditches and culverts as well
as grading the County Road through the site. This work
was done to control runon water, provide data for runon
water control design, evaluation of quantities of water
requiring bio treatment and provide information for
evaluation of onsite relocation of mine wastes.
5) the collection of site samples. The series of site
samples taken during September should be more
representative of individual source water quality with
the control work that has been completed. The results
were not received in time for inclusion in this report.
6) the survey and placement of panels for air photo mapping
of the site to provide adequate site detail for bio
treatment system design and runon control ditch design.
The flight had not been made by the end of September.
7) the application for and receipt of permits from San Juan
County and the U.S. Corps of Engineers to perform the
remediation project.
8) the photo recordation of the site and submittal to the
San Juan County Historical Society for document
preservation.
9) the addition of 6 tons of hydrated lime to the Koehler
pond to raise pH, precipitate and settle metals before
decanting in preparation for pond cleaning.
- London Mine Portals - Waste Dumps
Status of this site has not changed from the 2nd quarter or
August monthly reports.
