September 1996 Monthly Report
Page 2
- Surface Mill Tailings at Eureka
Implementation of the work plan for this site continued
throughout the month of September. A total of 76,675 cubic
yards has been removed from the site and consolidated into the
Mayflower Tailings Pond #4 as of September 30th. Both
excavators worked at the site throughout the month.
At the consolidation site, Mayflower Tailings Pond #4,
quicklime kiln dust and hydrated lime have been added to the
deposited material to stabilize the pH. A total of 119 tons
of this alkaline material has been added.
A modification to the Section 404 permit for this project was
requested and approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
This modification was for building additional stream crossings
to access tailings piles in the southern portion of the work
area. Attached are site progress pictures taken on September
11, 1996 as well as pictures of the consolidation location on
Tailings Pond #4.
- Gold Prince - Mill Tailings
The interior bulkhead that will divert water back into the
Sunnyside Mine Pool was poured on September 25, 1996. Prior
to the pour, DMG inspected the site preparation and forming.
Three samples were taken during the pour for 7 day and 28 day
strength tests.
Pictures of the bulkhead preparation are attached.
The second bulkhead planned for the Gold Prince tunnel to
retain surface fracture flows within that system will be
constructed during the 1997 construction season due to snow
conditions at the site this late in the season.
A modified work plan was submitted to CDPHE on September 19,
1996 for review and approval of the surface aspects of this
mitigation project. This plan was prepared to address
historical and cultural concerns that have delayed site
permitting and work plan implementation at this site.
Site water quality monitoring samples were taken during the
month but results were not received for inclusion in this
report. They will be submitted with the October monthly
report.
- Longfellow - Koehler Mine Waste Project
Progress at this site has consisted of working towards
isolation and diversion of site water sources in order to
better understand the site and develop the best practical
remediation plan.
