4. The wetlands areas and artifacts thereon should he
left intact.
5. Other structures, i_e the old mill, boardinghouse
foundations, tram tower etc should be undisturbed.
6. Donation of site to county or other entity may assist
in long term preservation of historic and recreational
values.
4. KOHLER -- LONGFELLOW PROJECT
a. Historic & Cultural Value
The above site contains two mines, the Kohler Tunnel, and the
Longfellow Shaft. The Longfellow is considered significant
due to the existing shaft buildings. very few shaft buildings
exist in the county, and these are well preserved.
There is a frame building on the Kohler dump. While somewhat
intact, it is a simple frame building and offers no special
historic or architectural significance, though it is one of a
limited number of such structures still existent.
Both sites have high interpretive value due to their location
to US Highway 550. The site was not deemed significant by the
SHPO.
b. Environmental Benefits of Remediati.ona
This site has been estimated to contribute a substantial
proportion of metal loading to Mineral creek, from both dump
seeps and portal discharges, primarily from the Kohler. Clean
water from behind the Longfellow is becoming contaminated by
pausing through the dump. Remediation efforts here are likely
to have a significant positive environmental benefit on the
upper Animas Basin and down stream. .
c. Recommendations:
The committee considers that the Kohler portion of this site
has relatively low historic significance, but the Longfellow
portion has a high significance. Re-mediation has potential
for high environmental benefit particularly at the Kohler.
The committee notes the applicant does not plan to remove the
Longfellow shaft buildings and such preservation should be
recommended. Sunnyside is tentatively planning to move much
of the Longfellow Dump but notes that other options for
hydrologic controls may also achieve cleanup coals. The
- committee recommends trying hydrologic diversion type
controls and capping the dump in place to achieve
environmental. goals. Again the dump forms an integral part
of the mine's significance and is better left in place.
