On 6/16/97, DMG conducted a pre-pour inspection of the preparations completed for the
Ransom Portal interior bulkhead. The Ransom Portal is located approximately 7.5 miles
NE of Silverton, on the north side of Eureka Gulch, at approximately 10,500' elevation, in
portions of the SW 1/4 of Section 19, T42N, R6W, NMPM, San Juan County.
Inspection Date: 6/16/97 Inspection occurred from 10:00 am through 11 :00
am (1 hour inspection + 4 hours total travel time)

Field Conditions: Cloudy and warm
Observations: Preparations for concrete pour for interior bulkhead were near completion.
Interior bulkhead location was approximately 300' from portal mouth. Tunnel constriction
at prepared location allows final bulkhead to function as wedge plug.
Loose rock was not observed at interior bulkhead location. Tunnel walls and roof at
interior bulkhead location were clean and dry. SGC representatives stated that
preparations included removal of loose rock, sandblasting, washing, and vacuuming of
roof, walls and floor. No open fractures were observed at the interior bulkhead location.
Parent igneous rock appeared competent. Floor of bulkhead location will be final washed
and vacuumed prior to pour. Pump and 6" diameter pipe were installed, directing tunnel
drainage through bulkhead location. Outlet of drain pipe discharged to Eureka Gulch,
discharge was visually estimated at 20 gpm, discharge appeared clear, no sample taken.
Concrete forms were constructed of 8"x 8", 2"x 6" and 2"x 12" lumber. Operator stated
that all lumber was strength rated fir. Concrete forms fitted tightly with parent rock.
Water side of form was faced with double 2"x 12" lumber. Air side of form was faced
with double 2"x 6" lumber. Concrete fill pipe collar with slide gate was installed at top of
