41 t
Boulder Creek Tailings 2 June 30, 1997
SGC Mine Remediation Project Inspection Date 6/3/97
DMG File M-77-378
Operator stated that some additional tailings were located within the road embankment
for Hwy 110. Apparently, pre-law tailings had been incorporated in road embankment for
Hwy 110 during highway construction. Where tailings could not be removed without
potential for adverse affect to stability of Hwy 110 embankment, operator covered
exposed tailings with layer of soil and limestone and graded cover material to blend with
existing slopes. Operator's attention to reclamation principles while ensuring stability of
existing structures is appreciated.
Tailings relocation and final grading had not eliminated historic railroad grade. Historic
railroad grade is located immediately adjacent to previous â–ºocation of tailings pond
embankment. Operator's sensitivity to preservation of historically significant structures is
appreciated.
Operator stated that remaining soils were augmented with 10 tons of limestone and 700
pounds of hydrated lime. Limestone and hydrated lime were apparent in surface soils
throughout reclaimed areas. Operator stated that disturbed areas were seeded with the
approved seed mix. Evidence of seeding was observed. Disturbed area was mulched
with grass hay at approximately 2 tons/acre. Disturbed area appeared stable, no
evidence of slumping, sliding or erosion was observed. Straw bail sediment filters were
intact. Operator indicated that additional shrub plantings and mulch were scheduled to
occur.
(end of report)
cc: Allen Sorenson, DMG
Sarah Johnson, CDPHE WQCD
