Clean up spills <br />immediately and avoid generating dusty conditions. <br />3.4.9 Sodium Hydroxide — 50% solution with water <br />When handling sodium hydroxide, the following PPE should be used: tight fitting chemical safety <br />goggles or face shield and protective gloves and clothing including rubber boots and aprons. A MSHA <br />approved dust mask or respirator should be worn if conditions are dusty or if fumes are present. It is <br />recommended that adequate ventilation or a local exhaust system be used. Wash thoroughly after <br />handling. <br />In the event of a spill/release where level of exposure is unknown, a positive pressure, self - contained <br />respirator is required. The sodium hydroxide solution can be covered with inert absorbent and swept up <br />into containers for appropriate disposal. Water can be used to flush the spill area. If the spill is in <br />excess of 1,000 pounds, it is considered a reportable quantity. A MSHA approved dust mask or respirator <br />should be worn if conditions are dusty or if fumes are present. It is recommended that adequate <br />ventilation or a local exhaust system be used. If splashing is likely while mixing solution, a chemical <br />resistant apron or protective suit is recommended. A MSHA approved dust mask or respirator should be <br />worn if conditions are dusty or if mist is present. It is recommended that adequate ventilation or a local <br />exhaust system be used.
