STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver,Colorado 80203
Phone:(303)866-3567
FAX:(303)832-8106
May 26, 1995 DEPARTMENT OF
NATURAL
Mr. Hal Pranger RESOURCES
Office of Surface Mining Roy Romer
1999 Broadway Governor
Suite 3320 James S Lochhead
Denver, Colorado 80202 Executive Director
Michael B Long
Division Director
RE: Containment Furrow Designs, Coal Basin Mine
Dear Hal:
Enclosed are pertinent maps and other information regarding the
containment furrows at Mines 3 and 4 .
The concept to be employed is to contain water on the bench while
the vegetation is becoming established on the bench and outslopes.
The Forest Service, who states that they will control this property
as a result of pending land exchanges, wishes to have surface flows
run off of the bench as sheet flow. They are not interested in
construction of diversion ditches and other more intrusive
practices being employed. It is anticipated that the containment
furrows would have a life of under ten years. They should have
outlived their usefulness by then, and will either be silted in or
could be graded out to accommodate the Forest Services desires of
having free draining benches.
Included in this package are copies of draft conceptual plans, maps
showing furrow locations, and a conceptual cross section. we are
looking for a simple design which meets the containment concept,
which is temporary in nature and which is stamped by a Professional
Engineer, if possible. The best case is to have a generic design
which could be fitted to each of the reclamation areas. If
possible, we would like to have the design by June 14, 1995.
Thanks for your help on this project. Please contact me at ( 303)
241-0336 (2148 Broadway, Suite C-5, Grand Junction, Colorado 81503)
if you have questions or comments.
Sincerely,
Steven Renner
Project Manager
