The Coal Basin Mine is being reclaimed by the State of Colorado, Division of Minerals and
Geology. The mine is located four miles west of Redstone, and is accessed by paved road.
Roads on the mine site are improved dirt.
The purpose of this project is to accomplish spot control of noxious weeds within certain
portions of the Coal Basin Mine as a continuation of a long term weed control strategy. The
goal of this application project is to accomplish a 90% mortality rate of the target species, while
minimally impacting non - target species. Past weed control efforts have been largely successful.
In order to promote revegetation potential of the previously treated areas, spraying will occur
twice during the 2002 growing season, once in June and once in September. Some areas will
be treated on both occasions, and some will be treated only in September.
TASK 1: HERBICIDE APPLICATION
General
The Project area is approximately twenty (20) acres in size, but it is not contiguous in nature.
The attached map shows the approximate locations of noxious weed treatment areas. Most
areas have been previously treated. However, individual target plants within each area are still
growing. The goal of this application project is to achieve a 90% mortality rate of the target
species within the Project Area, while minimally impacting non - target species. This will be
accomplished by applying herbicide on two different occasions.
The Sutey Refuse Disposal Area and the Huntsman and Bear Creek Project Areas and the Old
Refuse Pile Area have been previously reclaimed. Access to these areas will need to be
accomplished only by all terrain vehicle, horseback, farm equipment weighing less than 1.5
tons, or by foot. Access by vehicles other than those specified will not be permitted at any area
which has been reclaimed. Aerial application is not permissible.
Although some of the infested areas are near or adjacent to roads, access to other infested
areas may be difficult due to the steepness of the slopes and due to past reclamation activities.
In most areas, access by all terrain vehicles is feasible. In other areas, particularly the
Huntsman and Bear Creek Project Areas, and portions of the Sutey Refuse Disposal Area,
access is limited to foot traffic. Backpack sprayers will likely be used in these areas.
The Road A Area, the Sutey Refuse Disposal Area access road and the lower southerly and
westerly portion(s) of the Sutey Refuse Disposal Area are accessible to truck traffic.
Application Timing
The first application of herbicide will begin on June 25, 2002, and MUST be completed by July
1, 2002. It is anticipated that the application can be accomplished in no more than seven (7)
consecutive working days. The dates may be modified if noxious weeds develop more or less
quickly than they typically do at this location. PROJECT MANAGER will provide
CONTRACTOR with as much notice as possible of any change in application dates.
The second herbicide application will occur in mid - September, and MUST be completed by no
later than September 27, 2002. It is anticipated that the application can be accomplished in no
more than four (4) consecutive working days. The dates may be modified if noxious weeds
develop more or less quickly than they typically do at this location. PROJECT MANAGER will
provide CONTRACTOR with as much notice as possible of any change in application dates.
3
