IMPLEMENTATION OF THE RECLAMATION PLAN
MINE#5
Mid-Continent Resources
The bench area of Mine #5 is situated at approximately 9,500' elevation, with steep to
vertical slopes surrounding. The bench was excavated as a cut and fill structure.
Above the cut, terrain is rugged and steep, and is heavily wooded.
The reclamation area can be described as having three zones, descending from the
cut:
Area 1: A bench from which the main portal was developed (on the west side);
Area 2: Natural and fill slopes through which the roadway passes, below the bench;
Area 3: A relatively flat yard area formerly used for coal loading and storage, and,
northeast, a sediment pond into which drainage from the reclamation area is
routed.
Photographs of the area have been taken, and sectors within the three areas identified,
as a means of reference on the map. These are described as follows:
Area 1:
The uppermost bench runs approximately 1,500'east and west, and consists of a cut
on the south, fill on the north, side. As described in the geotechnical report prepared
by Geo-Hydro1, most of the cut is in colluvium, typically 50'high; except that the west
end of the cut(above the main portal) is in Mesaverde sandstone and shale. The
bench was excavated from rock and soil.
West End. (Sector 1A) An avalanche run crosses the west end of the mine bench, at
the location of the portal. As indicated on the attached map, the west end of the bench
was excavated from rock.
Middle (Sector 1B) The middle of the bench, which contains the base of the (former)
lamphouse, appears to consist primarily of fill, although rock may be encountered
toward the cut. The contour of the hillside above has two low spots which may direct
drainage and/or some minor avalanching, through this sector. The base of the cut
slope has reached a relatively moderate angle, and appears to consist of soil/rock.
East End(Sector 1C) The eastern-most end of the bench. It does not differ from the
mid-sector of the bench, except that it borders an area of avalanching, and has some
significance for drainage of the area as a whole.
Area 2
West End(Sector 2A) The fill slope.below the west end of the bench is up to 100'
high, at a slope of 350 (Geo-Hydro). Outwash or avalanching has apparently carried
Contained in the permit, Vol. 8, App. V-E-2. Reclamation of Haul Roads and Mine Benches.
Prepared by Geo-Hydro Consulting, Inc., 11/30/83.
07/14/93 ,
