immediately uphill. This formed a series of small flat benches on
the hill slope. The slope, including benches was then fertilized,
hydro seeded and hydro mulched from above. The third area
consisted of an application of Soil Guard, which is a liquid
erosion control blanket applied with a hydro seeding machine. The
hill slope was fertilized and seeded prior to application of the
Soil Guard. In the final test section, benches identical to those
constructed in the second test section were built, but these were
hand fertilized, seeded and mulched. Casual observation so far
indicates that the Soil Guard produces the best results, followed
by hand seeded benches, hydro seeded benches and hydro seeded
slopes.
We have performed emergency repairs on a flume which transports one
of the creeks at the site around the facilities area. We also
continue to maintain the site spring and fall. This is done to
maintain the road drainage system. This work will diminish as the
roads are reclaimed.
1996
The following projects are to be completed at the mine this year:
Mines 1 and 2: Structural demolition, partial highwall
elimination, hydrologic control and revegetation of less steep
slopes will be accomplished at the mines and associated fan
entries. The access roads to the fans will also be reclaimed.
Currently in progress. Approximately 24 acres. Ray Ward Trucking,
Dolores, Contractor.
Rock Tunnel: The project calls for demolition of existing block
walls, installation of 48 inch pipe in each entry, backfilling of
the entries to prevent collapse on the pipes, construction of a
stream channel to convey the flow to a nearby creek, structural
demolition, partial backfilling of the highwall and revegetation.
Approximately 7 acres. Started July 15. ERM Enviroclean, Denver,
Contractor.
Rock Tunnel Waste Dump: Final grading of the upper portions of the
dump will be accomplished, including construction of two drainage
swales. The pile will receive an average of 14 inches of topsoil
and topsoil substitute. Approximately 17 acres. Scheduled to
start July 22. Wagner Construction, Craig, Contractor.
Roads E, F, G, Mine 5 Fan road, Mine 3 Fan road: Approximately 9
miles of haul and access roads will be reclaimed. The reclamation
concept is to restore the hydrologic functions of drainages
interrupted by the road system. Culverts will be decommissioned,
road ditches filled, roads surfaces either graded flat or graded
slightly to the outside and about 140 rolled dips installed.
Outslope erosion control structures will be constructed. The road
benches, inslopes and less steep outslopes will be revegetated.
Approximately 38 acres. Job starts August 1. Dirt-N-Iron, Silt,
Contractor.
