STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Department of Natural Resources PIV74,Wit ,
1313 Sherman St, Room 215
Denver,Colorado 80203
Phone (303)866-3567 VOIN
FAX•(303)832-8106
DEPARTMENT OF
MEMO NATURAL
RESOURCES
July 19, 1996
Roy Romer
Governor
TO: Minerals and Geology Staff James S.Lochhead
Executive Director
FROM: Steve Renner% Michael B Long
Division Director
RE: Coal Basin Reclamation
I thought that I would provide a brief summary of the work which
the Division has undertaken at the Coal Basin Mine.
The Division has hosted a public meeting at least annually in the
Carbondale area. This year we have hosted a public tour of the
site, which was well received. 'We remain active with local
interest groups by periodically attending their meetings in order
to provide information regarding the reclamation process. We will
continue to entertain a high level of public input throughout the
reclamation process.
Reclamation Activities
1995
The Division reclaimed approximately 42 acres last year. This
acreage was divided between three projects which were completed by
independent contractors.
Waste Piles: This project accomplished final grading, stream and
diversion channel construction, topsoil application and
revegetation. Reclamation of the two waste piles accounted for
about 23 acres of revegetation work.
Mines 3 and 4: Structural demolition, outslope and highwall
reduction, sediment containment and revegetation work was
accomplished. About 10 acres were reclaimed at each location.
During completion of this project it began to become apparent that
conventional hydro seed and hydro mulch application at high
altitude sites may not yield the best results. This is primarily
due to both steepness of slopes and intensity of afternoon rain
showers and snow melt runoff.
Miscellaneous: Steep slope revegetation experiments were
initiated. A steep slope was divided into four test plots. In one
section, hydro seed and hydro mulch was applied with fertilizer as
at Mine 3. In another section, logs were anchored to the slope,
and the area behind the log filled by shoveling dirt from
