To accomplish this we are eliminating the ditches and culverts, regrading the roads
so that they encourage water to follow the contour of the adjacent slopes, ripping the
road surface so that water infiltrates the ground rather than flowing over the ground
surface and potentially causing erosion, and then revegetating these areas.
During the 1997 reclamation season we have scheduled two large projects. The
Warehouse Vicinity Project will accomplish reclamation of approximately twenty acres
in the lower part of the Basin, just west of the old office location. We will also
undertake a fourteen acre steep slope revegetation demonstration project in the south
western portion of the Basin. The goal of this project is to accomplish stabilization
of the steep slopes below the upper portion of a haul road and below a mine bench.
Approximately fourteen acres will be revegetated during this project. We are also in
the final stages of acquiring a grant from the Americorps Program. Americorps will
sponsor twelve volunteers to undertake a large scale tree planting effort at the
location of the mine entries. This will occur in the early summer.
The Division is very aware of its responsibility to accomplish reclamation at Coal
Basin. We are making every effort to successfully complete this mission.
Please contact me if you have questions or comments.
Sincerely,
_ Michael B.
