hole. Soil will be packed around the roots of the seedlings so that the root balls are completely
buried, and in a manner which eliminates subsurface air pockets from forming. A small water
containment berm, eighteen inches (18") in circumference and five inches (5") in height, will be
constructed around each seedling.
Shrub Planting
The shrub planting portion of the project will occur at the base of the Mine 3 bench north
outslope, and below the Mine 5 fan outslope.
The purpose of this phase of the project is to slow water draining from the outslopes, and to
retain sediment which is transported by the runoff. Approximately three (3) acres will be
impacted by this Task. Access to these areas will be involve travel by foot, horse or all terrain
vehicle. It is anticipated that two hundred (200) willow bundles per acre will be olanted in a
random pattern.
Willow cuttings may be obtained locally from property managed by the U. S. Forest Service. A
written statement of approval for the cutting and removal of willow cuttings from Forest Service
managed lands must be provided to the PROJECT MANAGER prior to initiating this task.
Individual willow cuttings will be no less than twenty four inches (24") in length. Cuttings will be
soaked in water containing polyacrylamide for at least twenty four(24) hours prior to planting.
When planting, cuttings will be stripped of stems and tied together in bundles of ten (10). The
bundles will be placed horizontally into a trench excavated sufficiently wide and long to
accommodate the willow cutting bundle. The depth of the excavation shall be sufficiently deep
so that after the bundle is placed in the excavation, six inches (6") of soil may be placed on top
of it without the soil exceeding the height of the adjacent ground surface.
Measurement and Payment
Areas where tries and willow bundles are planted will be sampled to determine whether the
specified planting densities have been met. Areas where the specified planting densities have
been met will be measured to the nearest 0.1 acre and paid at the unit price bid on the Bid
Schedule Item 5. The price bid shall include all costs for labor, materials, equipment and all
other items necessary for tree and shrub planting as described in these specifications. Task 5,
Tree and Shrub planting is NOT guaranteed.
TASK 6 HAND LABOR
Laborer(s) will be provided to accomplish erosion control work on slopes within the Project Area
at the direction of the PROJECT MANAGER. This work shall include cutting trees from nearby
areas, transporting and anchoring them to the side slopes; digging trenches in consolidated and
unconsolidated materials; transplanting shrubs in the vicinity of the Project Area; anchoring
shrub cuttings in gullies and on slopes; transporting and hand placing rock materials within
gullies; hand mulching and seeding as well as other miscellaneous activities. The
CONTRACTOR must provide appropriate hand tools and transportation in good working
condition for laborer(s) to accomplish these miscellaneous erosion control projects. The hours
outlined in Item 6 of the Bid Schedule are NOT guaranteed.
14
