GARFIELD COUNTY
PLANNING DEPARTMENT APPENDIX C9
GLENWOOD SPRINGS, COLORADO 31601
PF1IIr r 94S-8212
2014 BLAKE AVENUE
April 8, 1976
U. S. Forest Service
P.O. Box 248
Carbondale, Colorado .81623
Attn: Mr. victor Weyers
Dear Mr- Weyers:
Garfield County is currently engaged in discussions concerning
revisions to its 1968 General Plan. Recommendations concerning the
goals statements and suggested policy are expected to be completed
sometime in June.
Concerning the proposals associated with the Thompson Creek Planning
Unit of the White River National Forest some relevant observations
concerning Garfield County are:
(1) Plans for expansion of developed ski areas within
the planning unit should have as their focus day
and local use ski demand, not destination resort
areas. Priority should be given to the expansion
of the Sunlight Ski Area potential before any new
areas are contemplated. New areas to be developed
in the planning unit should not unreasonably dis-
place the character of the area for dispersed
recreation activity or wildlife systems. rt would
seem that the resin Peaks potential ski area,
because of its location would be the most
undesirable of the possible sites.
(2) Development in the County due to the impending
coal mining activity planned by the Anschutz
Mining Company is expected to center in the area
of Carbondale in the County.
(3) Most of the residential development that is taking
place in the Four Mile area of Garfield County
is occurring in the lower portion of the valley.
3a
