Site Reclamation Activity
4/94 - 3/95
Page 7
The American Tunnel waste dump material and Lead Carbonate
tailings were used to bring portions of the east end and west
end up to what is anticipated to be the final reclaimed
subgrade. This material as placed was mixed with alkaline
material to provide an initial pH adjustment from acidic to
near neutral or alkaline. This material was then capped with
2 feet minimum of overburden from the borrow area behind and
close to Tailings Pond #4.
2) realigning the upslope runoff diversion ditch on the west end
of Tailings Pond #4 to allow the backslopes to be stabilized
for final reclamation (AM-004) . The invert of this realigned
ditch was lined with 40 mil PVC liner which was then covered
with subsoil material and the steeper section armored with
rock. In addition, a steep natural upland drainage path into
this ditch was lined with 40 mil PVC liner and rock armored.
Subsurface water interception and toe drains were also
installed along most of the finished ditch behind the pond to
divert upland water around the pond and stabilize the finished
backslopes.
3) planting the finished backslopes with the Mountain Mix
(attached in Appendix A) as well as the pond top surface that
was brought to the anticipated final grade and capped.
Seeding was at a rate of 22 lbs pls/acre. These areas were
also fertilized with liquid fertilizer ( 32-0-0) at a rate of
50 gallons per acre and mulched with 1 ton per acre of hay
mulch. The steepest slopes were also covered with netting
material and/or erosion blankets to hold the mulch in place
and minimize erosion while the vegetation is being
established.
4) planting of miscellaneous shrubs across the area.
Planned activity for 1996 includes;
1) maintenance of the vegetation as required and planting of more
shrubs and trees across the area.
2) usage of the area for deposition of material removed from the
American Tunnel and Terry Tunnel settling ponds and other site
reclamation waste material.
