Site Reclamation Activity
Page 3
4) cleanup, amendment, seeding and mulching of a small area below
the #4 water treatment settling pond .
Amendment consisted of limestone applied at a rate of 5000
lbs/acre.
Seeding was the Mountain Mix applied at a rate of 22 lbs/acre.
Hay mulch was applied at a rate of 2000 lbs/acre.
There is a possibility that vegetation will not be established
in this area because this area is very rocky with little soil .
5) a reduction of minesite buildings . A portion of the snowshed
building which collapsed during the winter was removed and
shipped with the metal recycler . A guard building was removed
and sold as a utility shed . An office trailer was removed
but is still stored at the Mayflower Mill area awaiting
disposal ( ie sale or salvage) .
6) replacement of the water treatment distribution pipes between
the reagent feed building and the settling ponds. The
original pipes were 2 - 10" steel lines that were replaced
with 2 - 12" SDR 32. 5 HDPE lines. In addition, a 2" - SDR 11
HDPE line was run to provide a flocculent feed line from the
reagent feed building to a mix tank placed at the head of
settling pond #1. This installation increased the efficiency
of the flocculent feed system and lime mixing thereby
improving water treatment efficiency.
7 ) removal of historic Lead Carbonate tailings that were placed
or spilled in the vicinity of the waste dump. This work was
a continuation of work approved in TR-11 as discussed in a
November 9, 1993 letter to the Division.
8 ) repair of diversions for stormwater runoff .
9) treating the water discharge from the portal throughout the
reporting year as required in the CDPS Permit for this
discharge. This treatment includes periodic cleaning of the
settling ponds with the sludge being hauled to the Mayflower
Mill - Tailings Pond #4 in tanker trucks for disposal .
Efforts continued to bring the American Tunnel discharge into
dependable compliance with the WET (Whole Effluent Toxicity)
parameters of the CDPS Permit. An amendment was requested and
granted effective 11/01/93 to change the WET limits from acute
to chronic at the IWC (Instream Waste Concentration) of the
discharge to the Animas River ( ie 10 . 3 0) . This limit is being
met with the current level of treatment.
