Tailings Pond No. 2 - Plate No. 3
No activity occurred on Tailings Pond #2 during the 1989
reporting year.
The planned activity for 1990 is to have a stability analysis
done for the Boulder Creek side of the pond. This analysis will
provide information required to develop a feasible reclamation
plan for the pond . After a reclamation plan is developed, a
Technical Revision will be submitted outlining a proposed
reclamation timetable prioritizing reclamation efforts for the
inactive permitted areas (Tailings Pond No. 1 , Tailings Pond No.
2, Engineering office site and Sunnyside Basin) . The anticipated rrr(
time of submittal for this technical revision is the spring of
1991.
Engineering Office Settling Ponds Area - Plate No. 3
The 7 acres that were graded and seeded during October of 1988
were replanted during August of 1989 because of poor germination
rates from the October planting. The probable cause of this
failure is the drought conditions experienced during the late
spring and early summer months of 1989 . A sprinkling system was
installed during Julv, 1989 and the area was replanted in August.
The August seeding appears to have been fairly successful .
Approximately 400 willow seedlings were planted across this area
in the fall .
Planned activities for 1990 are:
1) Maintenance of the 7 acres in progress.
2) Extension of the reclaimed area in progress by 3 . 2 acres to
include the ponds further to the southwest and along the
banks of the Animas River .
Mayflower Mill Area - Plate No. 3
Scrap iron was sorted and hauled away by a recycler. The "duck
pond" was maintained by pumping water and solids accumulation
back through the mill for retreatment or transport to the
tailings pond.
The reagent building removed during the 1988 reporting year was
erected at the back of the coarse ore storage area out of any
avalanche runout zones ( see Plate No. 3) .
Planned activities for 1990 are:
1) Lining of the "duck pond" with clay material to eliminate
seepage and improving runoff drainage paths to the "duck
pond".
2) General site cleanup wi th eimr>fy:;F,is on the side-slopes
between the mill-site and the County road.
-6-
