The borrow area adjacent to Pond #3 was graded and hydroseeded
with the same seed mixture and treatment as used on Tailing Pond
#4 . The results to-date seem to be a total failure possibly
because the ground was too hard-packed to allow the seed to get
started after germination.
Planned activity for 1991 includes the following: -
Monitoring the site to determine if the seeding was a total
failure as it appears and if so, try to determine the cause of
failure so the appropriate corrections can be made to the
procedure used.
Tailings Pond No. 1 - Plate No. 3
Tailings Pond No. 1 was used for solid waste storage and disposal
during the reporting year .
The pond was sprayed with dust suppressant for control of wind
erosion.
Planned activity for 1991 includes:
(1 ) Spraying of the pond with dust suppressant for wind erosion
control .
(2) Use of the pond for storage of tailings from the Lead
Carbonate tailings pond as approved in TR-11 . These
tailings will help reduce the amount of material required
for future reclamation of Tailings Pond #1 .
Tailings Pond #2 - Plate No. 3
Activity on Tailings Pond #2 consisted of drilling the pond for
data used in the stability analysis submitted with TR-11 .
Planned activity for 1991 includes:
The earthwork for reclamation of Tailings Pond #2 as submitted
and approved in TR-11 .
Engineering Office Settling Ponds Area - Plate No. 3
Activity in this area consisted of grading and seeding an
additional 3 . 2 acres during July. The seed mix used was the
"Mountain Mix" as included in the Appendix. This mix was used
because the area is predominately natural soils with some
tailings intermixed. The seeding rate used was 22 lbs/acre with
mulch at 2000 lbs/acre and tackifier at 40 lbs/acre . Growth in
this area is poor and the 7 acres seeded previously (August 1989)
has fair to poor growth . One opinion that sounds feasible as to
why the germination rate is so poor in this area was that a one
step seed/mulch/tackifier mixture was applied. This could cause
the drying mulch to hold the seed off the ground instead of just
covering it. A two step procedure will probably be used in the
future (if mulch is used) to prevent this possibility.
- 5 -
