Management Practices
BLATTNERIT
ENERG
Physical Removal of Weeds
Physical control methods range from manual hand pulling of weeds to the use of hand and power tools
to uproot, girdle, or cut plants. If weeds are removed by hand, this effort should be focused on weed
species that have a single -root mass, facilitating easy and full removal.
Hoeing and weed whipping is a method to control weeds in small areas. Care must be used with these
methods near native plants, so that native plants are not damaged. Hoeing or weed whipping should be
used only before the seed has set, otherwise this disturbance would further disperse and promote the
establishment of the weed species. Considerations for hoeing and weed whipping include:
• Hoeing works best on patches of small weeds and with weeds that have a single -root mass. It is less
effective on larger weeds that can regenerate from cut roots. Hoed plant material should be bagged
or covered in tarpaulins and removed immediately from site.
• Weed whipping may be used for weed removal in limited upland areas with herbaceous plant
covers; however, it should not be used on weeds approaching maturity. Care must be employed
when weed whipping adjacent to native plants. Cut plant material should also be bagged or covered
in tarpaulins and removed immediately from site.
Pesticides
Unless prohibited by the State and Local Agricultural Departments, pesticides may be used for planting
work if deemed necessary. If the Contractor elects to use pesticides, such usage shall conform to the
following requirements:
• Oil and granular or pelleted forms of pesticides for weed control shall not be used.
• The Contractor shall obtain recommendations for the use of all pesticides from a licensed Pest
Control Adviser. At least 15 days prior to using any pesticides, a copy of the recommendations shall
be submitted to local Agricultural Agency for approval. The recommendations shall include, but not
be limited to, the pesticides to be used, rates of application, methods of application and areas to
which pesticides are to be applied.
• Before using any pesticides, the Contractor shall obtain the Agricultural Agency's written approval of
the Pest Control Adviser's recommendations.
• When used, pesticides shall be used in conformance with the approved Pest Control Adviser's
recommendations.
• The Contractor shall notify the Agricultural Agency at least 24 hours prior to each application of
pesticide and shall indicate the hours of application.
• Pesticides shall be mixed in conformance with the instructions provided on the applicable registered
label. Prior to mixing any pesticide, a copy of the registered label for the pesticide to be mixed shall
