'Y RECEIVED
OCT 261987
AIR POLLUTION CONTROL - FIELD INSPECTION WORk< SH ED LAND
FIECLAMATION DIVISION
COUNTY NUMBER SOURCE NUMBER DATE
124o 0001 08/o5/87
COMPANY: Climax Moly. Mine INSPECTOR: DENNIS M. MYERS
SITE LOCATION: Climax COUNTY: Lake
CONTACT PERSON: Bob Ki1born TIME:
TELEPHONE NUMBER: EIS UPDATE: yes
INSPECTION: ROUTINE[,,, ] COMPLAINT[ J FAC J PERMIT NUMBER:
HOURS: INSPECTION: 1 . 5 TRAVEL: 5. 0 REPORT: 0. 5 TOTAL: 7. C-)
EMISSION POINTS SUBJECT TO NSPS: none
IN COMPLIANCE: yes
----------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------
All mining operations at the Climax mines have again been stopped, and
the mine will not operate for at least the rest of this year. For this
reason, no calculations are included with this report.
If the mine again resumes operations, calcultions will be- submitted at
that time.
My inspection was of the tailings impoundments, in order to see if there
is a fugitive dust problem, and to see if the dust control plan submitted
by Climax has been implemented.
I observed that the #1 dam face has been completely treated with Cohere.; .
The #3 dam face was in the process of being treated. The #5 dam face has
had access roads cut, and treatment will take place shortly. It should be
noted that the control plan only called for treating the top 60 to 100
feet of the dam faces. Climax has also experimented with both Soil Seal ,
and Nalco, but found these two chemicals to be too expensive, so Coherex
has been used.
The beach areas appeared to be well treated with Cohere;; .
The only emissions I observed were from the #5 dam area. These emissions
were minor, and well within guidelines. Also, these emissions should be
reduced in the next few weeks with the application of Coherex .
To date, no complaints have been received by this office this year
concerning dust from these tailings impoundments..
I feel that Climax is in compliance with our regulations and their
fugitive dust control plan.
