Magnesium chloride was sprayed on 1. 2 miles of the county
road southeast of the Robinson tailing pond at a 50% solution
and the manufacturer ' s rate . Cost of the delivered and
applied product was $0. 14 per square foot or approximately
$6 , 100 per acre. The dust control efficiency appears to be
comparable to Coherex. However, when compared to the
approximate $330 per acre cost of Coherex, magnesium chloride
is not cost-effective.
The overall effectiveness of the 1987 dust suppression
program at the Climax Mine is considered by AMAX to be
excellent. This evaluation is particularly valid considering
the abnormally long and dry snow-free period during the year.
The faces of the dams , generally considered the most severe
wind-blow areas, were treated for only the second time in the
12 year history of the control program. Should the products
on these faces maintain their integrity over the winter, the
1988 dust control program may be less extensive and less
expensive than 1987. This situation will be evaluated at
snow-melt in 1988 and monitored throughout the snow-free
period.
Ultimately, the faces of the tailing dams will be stabilized
with rock blankets and the pond flats will be covered with
top soil/vegetation and/or rock. However, until a permanent
solution is effected , Climax will continue to make every
effort to control blowing tails in a practical , effective,
and responsible fashion.
-3-
