10
moist; with weak, fine granular structure; soft very friable,
slightly sticky moist and slightly plastic. It is relatively free
of gravel or rock fragments and has a pH of 7.3-7.7. It is weakly
or non-calcareous. The Ap horizon is 4-6" thick.
There is a clear, smooth boundary to the subsoil. The B2 horizon,
6-12", is a strong brown (7.5YR4/4) , moist) , sandy clay loam;
medium angular blocky to medium sub-angular blocky; moderately hard
dry, friable moist; moderately sticky and moderately plastic, wet;
with very few rock or shale fragments, slightly to strongly calca-
reous and slightly alkaline (pH 7.4-7.8) . Roots readily penetrate
this horizon.
The C horizon (10"-36" depth range) dominately 12"-30", is a
strong brown (7.5YR5/6) , dry sandy clay loam, dark brown (7.5YR5/4)
moist; strongly calcareous; and slightly alkaline (pH 7.6-7.9) ;
blocky to medium subangular blocky; moderately hard to moderately
friable dry, friable moist; slightly sticky to slightly plastic
wet. Shale and sandstone fragments may increase toward the lower
part of paralithic contact.
The Shavano soils overlie soft interbedded shale and sandstone
formations at depths ranging from 18" - 36" but the more conanon
depth to paralithic contact is 20-30". The soils are well drained,
have slow to medium runoff and are moderately permeable above the
paralithic contact. As mapped, these soils are darker in the
surface and probably receive more precipitation than typical of
Shavano soils (See official series description by S.C.S. , AJC, 4/73) .
They are used as irrigated cropland and seeded pasture. Native
vegetation would include sagebrush, Galleta grass, needlearass,
stipas and forbs.
5810 Topsoil Suitability. These soils will supply most of the
topsoil for the 116-acre tract. Quality to an average of 18" in
the smoother slopes and 12" on the steeper slopes is good. Cuts
can be made to 24" on gentler slopes and 20" on steeper slopes
