11
but quality will be fair only because of poorer texture, consistence
relations and increased chances of shale and sandstone inclusions.
Prime Farmland Considerations. These sloping, sandy clay loam
lands vary from 18"-30" over shale and sandstone and would not be
considered prime farm land on these slopes under 12"-13" annual
rainfall and a grazing season of 95-100 days.
Shavano clay loam, 10-20% slopes (4.09 acres) . Shavano clay loam
is a fine loamy, shallow (calcareous) mixed, frigid, (ustic)Torrior-
thent. Only one small area occurs just west of the major stripped
area. It appears this area has been disturbed or eroded so that
a calcareous clay loam or heavy sandy clay loam surface is exposed.
The slopes are steeper than typical for Shavano soils and the
depths to shale or sandstone range from 10"-30". The entire pro-
file is a calcareous sandy clay loam or clay loam with moderate
to weak subangular blocky structure in the C horizon and increas-
ing lime content to the paralithic contact with calcareous shales.
The soil reaction is mildly alkaline (pH 7.6) at the surface and
moderately alkaline (pH 8.0) in the 10"-18" horizon. These small
areas were not sampled as they appeared to be shallow, eroded
phases of the Shavano soils described above.
The surface soil is slightly hard (dry) and friable moist; slightly
plastic and strongly effervescent. The C horizon is hard dry and
sticky (wet) . The lower part is violently effervescent but shows
little segregated lime (fizz 2-3 levels) . Fragments of sandstone
and soft shale occur in the lower part and increase to the parali-
thic contact at 18-20".
This is a shallow or eroded phase of the Shavano soils and agri-
cultural suitability is primarily for native grassland.
5810E Topsoil Suitability is only Fair and to a depth of about 8"
on these steep, sloping, eroded phases of Shavano soils.
