9
and interrupted ditches cross the two forties. Soils are inter-
mittently watered and sometimes temporarily water-logged below
these ponds and along the drain in the west side of S4J4 SE;.
This does not seem to have materially changed the character of the
soil. If relocation of water flow is provided and the irrigation
discontinued, stripping of this tract should not encounter restric-
tive water problems. 'There is a hydrology plan for relocation of
these ditches.
THE SOILS
A previous soil survey was made by the Soil Conservation Service
(SCS) using aerial photos flown 7/22/'75. (Exhibit C-5 Soils
Map undated.) This showed soil 5804, Shavano clay loam, as the
dominant soil with soil 1004, Chapin clay loam, occurring in the
northwest part of the tract and soil 9904, Persayo-Shavano clay
loams occurring on isolated ridges of steeper slopes. This map
is not shown here.
Our examination of the tract indicates that 5810, Shavano fine
sandy loam and sandy clay loam, is the dominant soil on the gentler
slopes and that 5804, Shavano sandy clay loam, eroded phase, is
more limited to steeper slopes and eroded or disturbed areas. The
soil areas shown as 9904 are Persayo clay loam and sandy clay loam.
The soil 1004, Chapin clay loam was not mapped as the conditions
found are not typical of the Chapin series. The Chapin series
contains much more clay and is correlated as fine, montmorilli-
nitic, mesic, aridic Argiustoll. A description of the soils as
mapped follows.
5810 Shavano sandy clay loam, Slopes 2-5% (10.85 acres) , C Slopes
5-10% (66.10 acres)
l/
Shavano sandy clay loam is a fine loamy, mixed, frigid, (ustic)Cam-
borthid. The topsoil which has been disturbed by cultivation, is
a sandy clay loam, dark brown (7.5YR5/4) dry, and strong brown (7.5YR4/4)
1/Near borollic but lighter in color.
