April 17, 2012 C- 1981 - 014 /Southfield Mine KAG
using a hand -held instrument (shown at right). No methane was detected. A brass tag stamped
with the number 1205400 was noted on the side of the well casing. According to Mr. Patterson,
this tag was attached by the Division of Water resources at some point in the past.
To determine whether the well casing was open to the mine void, entirely or partially or not at
all, the plan was to add water into the well casing in an attempt to fill the casing, then measure
the level as it dropped over time. Annual Hydrology Report data indicates well MW -NW is 380
feet total depth and completed in the mine void at 360 -380 feet. Mr. Rutherford centered the
water hose over the well casing and opened the valve on the water truck to the fully open
position. Water immediately began entering the well bore rapidly by gravity flow (shown
below). Between 5 and 10 minutes later, the flow decreased as the water truck emptied the last
of the 1500 gallons into the well bore. Mr. Patterson estimated that 1500 gallons is
approximately 3 well bore volumes. All flow entered the well bore and did not at any time fill
the well bore to any noticeable level. Within about one minute after all water was added, most of
the rushing water sound ceased in the well bore.
t' rM4411l f J'J * ' 6
y
1
Mr. Patterson again measured for the presence of methane prior to any attempt to measure the
water level. None was detected. At that point, we decided to try to measure the well for water
level.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 7
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 3
Page 3 of 6
