April 17, 2012 C- 1981 - 014 /Southfield Mine KAG
Initial attempts were thwarted by twisting of the water level cable. We then physically ensured
that all twisting was eliminated by extending the cable horizontally across the ground surface
prior to entering the well. We
then slowly lowered the cable
and probe into the well casing,
detecting an audible and
repeatable water level reading at
354 feet below the top of the
casing. This reading could be
related to the addition of water
immediately prior to
measurement. Additional
measurements will be necessary
over time to arrive at any '- •"
conclusion regarding water level.
It appears that the well is open to
a significant void below the
ground surface. Whether it is
open to the mine workings cannot
be affirmatively known at this
time, although it is the Division
position at this time that based on
the previous fact that this well
entered the mine workings and
the our findings from this
inspection that this well serves
the purpose of detecting,
measuring, and sampling water in
the flooded Southfield mine
workings. The Division has two
recommendations:
• Measure the well more frequently for the presence of water
• Consider the use of a borehole camera to investigate the well casing for the entire depth
of the well
Mr. Patterson also asked me to accompany him to the site of the "Thompson culvert" located on
Newlin Creek just west and slightly south of County Road 15. I accompanied Mr. Patterson to
the site, where we found a 48 -inch diameter culvert under a ranch road that carried flow in
Newlin Creek from west to east. The culvert was found carrying flow at a depth of about one
inch at the outlet end (shown below)
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 7
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 3
Page 4 of 6
