west. The overburden will be excavated using scrapers and dozers and then placed or
pushed into an adjacent mined pit block. However, when excavation begins in Nucla East
area, overburden material will be placed adjacent to the pit onto land designated as a
temporary overburden stockpile (see Exhibit 12-3).
During overburden removal operations, some selective handling of material will be
performed in each mining area (Area No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and Nucla East) based on chemical
and physical core data contained in Tab 6 and discussions presented in Tab 21.
After the upper coal seam is removed in Areas No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3, the parting
material, composed of alternating layers of sandstone and shale, will be removed. The
parting material is approximately 8 to 9 feet thick and is removed by scrapers or dozers
and placed or pushed into an adjacent mined pit.
After the overburden or parting has been removed above each individual coal seam, a dozer
or loader will clean off any overburden or parting material remaining on top of the coal.
In order to facilitate handling of the coal, a dozer will rip or break up the coal.
Contracted 25-ton coal haulage trucks will be loaded by a wheel loader. Once a truck is
loaded, the coal will be transported approximately six miles to the power station. Table
12-1 lists the major mining equipment to be used at the Nucla Mine.
The estimated amount of overburden and parting volumes to be extracted and corresponding
swelled volumes for all mining areas are presented on Table 12-2.
Coal Supply Agreement
The coal customer (Colorado-Ute) will be performing an approximate two-year burn at its
Nucla Power Generating Station to test and adjust recently installed circulating
fluidized-bed combustion boilers. During this test burn phase, coal having differing
quality characteristics will be evaluated in order to optimize generating station
performance. It is anticipated that coal from the Nucla Mine will be used for a portion
of the test burn.
The coal supply required from the Nucla Mine for the two-year period (1987-1988) is
estimated to be 300,000 tons. The coal customer will periodically order coal from Nucla
Mine throughout this two-year period and during the next two-year period (1989-1990).
12-3 Revised 08/19/88
