approximately six to eight weeks and delivered to the power station. After this period,
operations will be moved to the Nucla East Mine area (see Figure 12-1).
After mining has been completed in Area No. 4, operations will continue in Area No. 1 with
scrapers and dozers uncovering both the Lower and Upper Dakota seams and in Area No. 2
uncovering the Lower Dakota seam. Upon completion of Area No. 2, operations will move to
Area No. 3 and continue in Area No. 1.
Area No. 2 is located approximately 1500 feet southeast of Area No. 4 in the NE>k of
Section 36, T47N, R16W. Mining will begin on the north side, generally developing pits in
a northeast-southwest orientation progressing southeasterly. Only the Lower Dakota seam
will be recovered. Maximum overburden recovery depth will approach 20 feet. Coal
quality may not meet specifications through this area. Should this happen, operations in
Area No. 1 and No. 2 may occur concurrently to enable the blending of coal to meet quality
requirements.
Mining Area No. 3 is located adjacent to and south of Area No. 2, in the NE>k Section 36,
T47N, R16W and NW>k Section 31, T47N, R15W. Pits will initially be sequenced in an
east-west progression and orientated generally north-south. As shown on Exhibit 12-2
however, later pits on the southeast side are oriented to prevent excessive downslope
disturbances. The maximum overburden depth will approach 20 feet. The Lower Dakota seam
will be recovered. Coal quality may not meet specifications through this area. Should
this happen, operations in Area No. 1 and No. 3 will occur concurrently to enable the
blending of coal to meet quality requirements.
Area No. 5 is located approximately 1,000 feet northeast of the former shop building in
the SEkSEk of Section 25, T47N, R16W. This area will not be mined due to low coal
quality and is shown on Exhibit 12-2.
After mining has been completed in Areas No. 1 and No. 3, operations will move into the
Nucla East area (see Figure 12-1). The Nucla East area is located in Section 61, T47N,
R16W and approximately 8,000 feet southwest of the current mining area (see Exhibit 12-1).
Only the Lower Dakota coal seam will be recovered. Maximum overburden depth will approach
45 feet. Mining will begin along the eastern cropline of the Nucla East area and use a
block mining technique to develop the pits (see Exhibit 12-3). The blocks will average
approximately 400 feet long and 150 feet wide. Mining will generally progress to the
12-2 Revised 08/19/88
