TAB 12
COAL RESOURCE RECOVERY PLAN
Introduction
This Tab describes the coal resource recovery plan which is to be implemented within the
existing and proposed permit areas during 1986 through 1990 (see Exhibit 12-1). The
mining methods, including overburden and coal removal, coal supply agreement, and mining
equipment are described.
Mining Methods and Equipment
Mining at Nucl a Mine will be conducted in three areas (i.e., Area No. 1, 2, and 3) as
shown in Exhibit 12-2. All excavation will be performed by scrapers or dozers and will be
conducted in areas where coal was previously being mined using a dragline. The
anticipated mining schedule for each area where mining will occur during the test burn is
graphically shown in Figure 12-1. Montrose County requested the use of Area No. 4 and No.
5 for an extension of the Montrose County Landfill . Peabody completed mining Area No. 4
in February, 1988. Area No. 5 coal does not comply with Peabody's customer's coal quality
requirement and is not a marketable mining area. Attachment 12-1 contains a copy of the
correspondence which preceded a request by Montrose County and Peabody to revise this
mining permit and exclude Area No. 4 and No. 5 from the permit area.
Mining activities began in 1987 at the former shop area (Area No. 4). Overburden removal
in this area was accomplished by dozers pushing the material into the pits adjacent to the
landfill surrounding the former shop area. Maximum overburden depth was approximately 40
feet. Both the Upper and Lower Dakota seams were removed. This area was mined
concurrently with Area No. 1.
Area No. 1 is located in the SSW% Section 25, T47N, R16W and approximately 2500 feet
northwest of the former mine office. Both the Upper and Lower Dakota coal seams will be
recovered. Maximum overburden depth will approach 65 feet. Excavations will develop pits
having a generally east-west orientation which progress northward. In 1987, mining will
begin at the west end of Area No. 1 with dozers. Scrapers will be used later, once
dozer excavation becomes uneconomical . The Upper Dakota seam will be uncovered for
12-1 Revised 08/19/88
