At the Nucla Mine, the previous explosive storage facilities (existing
prior to cessation) were moved to their present location in 1976. The
ammonium-nitrate fuel oil mixture (ANFO) explosive is stored in a powder
magazine, a second magazine contained the prima-cord and connectors, and
a third magazine contained the blasting caps (see Exhibit 12-2 and
13-1) . These facilities were dismantled when operations ceased but were
reinstalled at the same location in 1987 prior to mining activities. At
the Nucla East area , similar facilities will be used for explosive
storage (see Exhibits 12-3 and 13-2) .
Presently, two above-ground fuel tanks are utilized at the Nucla Mine.
The diesel tank contains approximately 10,000 gallons and the gasoline
tank contains approximately 500 gallons. Both fuel tanks will be moved
to the Nucla East facilities area when required (see Exhibit 12-3) .
The sediment and water control plan and a more extensive discussion of
the facilities plan for the Nucla and Nucla East Mine areas is presented
in Tab 13.
Land Use
Land use adjacent to Nucla Mine is either irrigated hay/cropland
abandoned cropland or native rangeland used for livestock grazing and
wildlife habitat. Predominant native vegetation types and wildlife
habitats include upland sagebrush, pinyon-juniper, and areas of riparian
vegetation associated with Tuttle Draw and several small tributaries.
It is probable that irrigation tailwater has created or enhanced areas
of riparian vegetation.
According to public comment on Peabody Coal Company's 1976 Permit
Application, area resident requested abandoned cropland be returned,
postmining, to cropland. The Reclamation Plan, as presented in Tabs 19,
20, 21 and 22 is designed to return the permitted area to dryland
pasture. While Peabody will not irrigate these pastures, water
availability adjacent to the northwestern portion of the reclaimed
areas, along with postmining topography, will provide the postmine
1-3 Revised 08/19/88
