landowner with opportunities for irrigation. Riparian and shrub and
tree plantings will also enhance the area for wildlife.
The Nucla East mining area is more intensively used than the Nucla Mine.
Irrigated pasture, haylands , and croplands predominate along with
farmsteads and abandoned orchards. The postmining land use in the Nucla
East area will be irrigated pasture, which will maximize the potential
of the land for the variety of land uses which are found in the area.
The Nucla Mine and Reclamation Plan, as presented herein, represents the
continuing operation of a relatively small western surface coal mine.
With about eleven employees and small areal extent, the environmental
and socioeconomic impacts are minimal , especially considering that the
mine has been in existence for almost 30 years (25 years with Peabody
Coal Company) . In addition, this mine plan incorporates improvements in
the water control facilities and revegetation methodologies which will
further minimize these impacts and improve the postmining land use
potential .
1-4 Revised 08/19/88
