generating station performance. Coal from the Nucla Mine and the Nucla
East mining area will be used for a portion of the test burn. The coal
supply required from the Nucla Mine and Nucla East mining area for the
period 1987-1990 is estimated to be 300,000 tons, ordered periodically
throughout the two year period.
Mining
Prior to temporary cessation, coal at the Nucla Mine was mined from the
Upper and Lower Dakota coal seams , uncovered by two 5 cubic yard
draglines. Upon reopening, as described in revised Tabs 12 and 13,
overburden will be removed by means of dozers and scrapers. The coal is
then loaded into 25-ton capacity haul trucks and transported over paved
county roads five and one-half miles to the power plant.
Facilities
Existing buildings at the Nucla Mine consist of an office trailer (10'w
x 37'1 x 8'h) , a bathhouse trailer (14'w x 38' 1 x 8'h) , and a parts
storage semi-truck trailer (8'w x 1 x 8'h) . These buildings were
placed on the minesite in 1987 to replace the combination office-shop
building which has been removed. Exhibit 12-2 shows the existing mine
facility area. Building facilities proposed for the Nucla East mining
area will consist of a wood-framed-metal clad pole barn (60'w x 100' l x
20'h) for a repair shop/warehouse and the relocation of an abandoned
house from the mining area for an office. In addition, the existing
trailer facilities as described above will be relocated to the new
facilities area as shown on Exhibit 12-3.
Potable water is currently supplied through public facilities and water
coolers. The 300-foot deep water well previously located at Nucla Mine
has been plugged and abandoned in accordance with proper procedures.
Potable water at Nucla East will be provided through a proposed
waterline that ties into the City of Nucla water system. Sewage from
the existing building facilities is treated and disposed through the use
of a septic tank and leach field system. Sewage from the proposed Nucla
East facilities will be treated and disposed of in the same manner.
1-2 Revised 08/19/88
