The structure, known as the Huntington
Irrigation Ditch, acts as a surface, overland conveyance of water
used for downstream irrigation, and overlies portions of the mine
and proposed mining areas . The potential renewable resource area
is the Pine Gulch Drainage in the southeastern portion of the
mine plan area. To avoid impacting the Pine Gulch stream,
National King Coal , Inc . has committed to not extracting coal
beneath this drainage .
Field observations indicate that surface subsidence features
are present above abandoned portions of the mine. To date a
total of 7 survey stations have been established by coordinate
and elevation for monitoring of subsidence. These stations
include 5 over old workings . These stations were established by
Colorado Licensed Surveyor No. 11373 , Clifford M. Schmid, and
have been monitored for movement on a semi-annual basis beginning
in the fourth quarter of 1981 .
