Field parameters and water quality samples are collected quarterly at CC -01, CC -02, CC-
03, and CC -04 and analyzed for the parameters listed in Table 3 -1.
5.5.3.2 Data
The period of record and compiled field measurements and water quality data (number of
measurements, less than detection events, maximum value, minimum value, average
value, standard deviation, and median value) for the sample stations CC -01, CC -02, CC-
03, and CC -04 are provided in Tables 5 -18, 5 -19, 5 -20, and 5 -21, respectively. Time
series plots of selected parameters (flow and pH, nitrate, and sulfate) are provided in
Figures 5 -12 and 5 -13, respectively.
5.5.3.3 Discussion
Surface water flows in the Cripple Creek drainage range from low flows of <10 to 164
gpm to high flows of 1,560 to 2,369 gpm. Minimum flows in the upper reaches are in
part due to the discharges from the City of Cripple Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Flows peak in the spring due to snowmelt runoff or in the summer due to seasonal rains
and runoff. Flow data are shown in Figure 5 -12. Flow rates (when reported for the same
day) can increase or decrease in a downstream direction (CC -01 to CC -02 to CC -03 to
CC -04).
The surface waters in Cripple Creek at CC -01, CC -02, and CC -03 are characterized as
sodium - bicarbonate water. CC -04 is characterized as calcium- sulfate water. Water
quality data provided in Tables 5 -18, 5 -19, 5 -20, and 5 -21 show median field pH values
range from 7.96 SU to 8.17 SU. Median nitrate values are elevated and decline
downstream from 12.85 mg/L as N at CC -01, to 12.5 mg/L as N at CC -02, to 11.1 mg/L
as N at CC -03, and to 7.12 mg/L as N at CC -04. The elevated nitrate values at CC -01
and downstream may be due to the City of Cripple Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant
discharges above CC -01. Median sulfate values increase in the downstream direction
from 79.4 mg/L at CC -01, to 82.4 mg/L at CC -02, to 86.1 mg/L CC -03, and to 170 mg/L
at CC -04. Time series plots of these parameters (pH, nitrate, and sulfate) are provided in
Figure 5 -13.
Compiled data and statistics for aluminum, manganese, and zinc, which are common
geochemical indicators in the Diatreme, are provided in Tables 5 -18, 5 -19, 5 -20, and 5-
21. The water quality data indicate that aluminum and zinc concentrations have been low
'Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company
Cresson Project Hydrologic Evaluation for Mine Life Extension 2
29
