be completed. The closure drain consists of a minimum 3 -foot thick layer of drainage
gravel (the same structural fill material being used for the underdrains) enclosed in a
geotextile.
7.2.2.5 Construction of Leak Detection
The LDS will be installed in the prepared subgrade prior to SLF placement. Design of the
LDS was discussed above in Section 7.2.1.6. After completion of the LDS, the SLF will
be placed both to provide protective support for the geomembrane and to provide the base
component of the composite liner system. The SLF will be comprised of a minimum one-
foot -thick layer of material with a permeability of 1 x10 cm/sec or less. It is anticipated
that the material will meet applicable Technical Specifications without the addition of
bentonite; however, bentonite will be used as necessary to meet permeability
requirements. The SLF will be placed and compacted, then tested by a professional
engineer or other appropriately qualified professional to ensure that it meets the technical
specifications (see Appendix 9, Volume V for a complete copy of the technical
specifications).
The composite liner system selected for the SGVLF area is discussed in Section 7.2.2
above and further described in the accompanying design report in Appendix 9, Volume
V. The composite liner system will be installed in accordance with the technical
specifications included in Appendix 9, Volume V. A qualified liner installation company
will install the liner and their work will be overseen by a professional engineer or other
appropriately qualified professionals, as has been done for construction of previous
phases. The completed liner installation, including copies of all required tests performed
on the liner, will be presented in a report that will be submitted to the OMLR for review
and acceptance prior to initiating solution application and leaching.
The "construction season" for installation of the critical liner portions of the SGVLF has
been tentatively identified for this site from about mid -April to mid - November. CC &V
also has been approved to use "cold weather seaming techniques" for synthetic liner
materials when temperatures are lower than 35 °F. As such, excavation and some filling
may be possible at other times in addition to this "construction season window." Section
7.2.2.7 below discusses the restrictions on liner installation.
The upper geomembrane liner and HVSCS will be covered by the two -foot thick
(minimum) lift of DCF (crushed ore) for protection. CC &V will continue to use ore
material which meets the applicable technical specification as appropriate for DCF. Ore
material to be used as DCF which requires screening (and perhaps crushing, if needed to
Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company
Cresson Project Mine Life Extension 2
7 -11
