This area may contain other species, however it will
remain unknown what additional species until after treatment has
been conducted. The roadway and flat areas N to the
creek may be conducive to boom and handgun spray, however the
edges of the reservoir are quite steep and will require scaling and
hose dragging. Along the W banks exists a sizeable infestation of
Common Mullein which will be labor intensive to control. It should
also be noted that Mullein stalks (even after treatment) can remain
in their desiccated state for years to come. From an aesthetic
standpoint this might not be attractive.
• Gravel Pit /Future Reclamation area (estimated to be
approximately 30 -40 acres) — This is a very large area which
currently is occupied by a gravel company. Currently Noxious
weeds noticed in this area were: Canada and Musk Thistles and
Common Mullein, however a drive through inspection of this area
was made and since a majority of weeds had been treated there
may be other species present which will not be known until
treatment has been conducted. This area will be in a constant
state of flux while the gravel company continues to disturb the soil
(which is the optimum environment for noxious weeds to flourish).
Once the area undergoes the reclamation process, VMI will need
to re- evaluate weed control methods as seeding plans, etc. will
need to be taken into consideration in developing a weed control
plan.
In order to establish an effective weed control management plan, it is
advised that treatments occur multiple times annually. VMI recommends
that treatments occur for at least 3 -5 years with an ongoing maintenance
program annually once infestations have been controlled.
Noxious weeds can germinate and grow often times more prolifically than
native grasses and forbs and generally for a longer growing season,
however optimal times for treatment are in spring, mid - summer (for
Page 2 City of Golden — Guanella Reservoir
.1
