• 2.05.4(2)(e)
Reclaimed areas sampled in 1991 correspond to Mining
Areas 1 and 2 and are located within Sections 4 and 5 of T 45 N, R
15 W, N M P Meridian, Section 32 of T 46 N, R 15 W, N M P Meridian,
and the western half of Section 33 of T 46 N, R 15 W, N M P
Meridian. Reclaimed areas sampled in 1992 correspond to Mining Area
3 and are located within Section 28 of T 46 N, R 15 W, N M P
Meridian and the eastern half of Section 33 of T 46 N, R 15 W, N M
P Meridian. Below is a description of which reference areas will
apply to which communities.
1. Native grassland community
The native grassland community exists in areas mapped in
both 1991 and 1992. However, all native grassland areas will be
compared to one reference area value. A large continuous reference
area that exactly matched the disturbed areas was not found in
1991. Instead, the native grassland reference area is composed of
two separate areas (labeled GREF in Drawing 113). As was approved
during baseline sampling, samples will be placed in the two areas
in proportion to their acreage.
2. Sagebrush rangeland community
• Sagebrush rangeland is the dominant community in the
permit area and stretches across both 1991 and 1992 sampled areas.
The cover and productivity of sagebrush rangeland sampled in 1991
differed from that sampled in 1992. Therefore, 1991 and 1992
sampled areas could not be statistically matched to the same
reference area. Reclaimed sagebrush rangeland areas sampled in
1991 will be compared to SREF-A by itself. Samples will be
randomly placed within SREF-A to adequacy to determine the success
standards for Mining Areas 1 and 2.
As noted above, the sagebrush reference area established
in 1991 (SREF-A) did not match the sagebrush disturbed area sampled
in 1992. As a result, it was decided that a second sage reference
area (identified on Drawing 113 as SREF-B) would be established to
be used in combination with SREF-A. Sampling will follow the
design used in the baseline survey: SREF-A and SREF-B will receive
equal numbers of cover, production, and woody plant density samples
not in proportion to their sizes (SREF-A is larger than SREF-B).
3. Pinyon-Juniper community
As noted on pages 11 and 16 of the 1991 report and pages
3 and 8 of the 1992 report, a reference area was not required for
the pinyon-juniper community. To determine reclamation success,
disturbed areas that were mapped as pinyon-juniper will be compared
to the applicable sagebrush reference area depending on whether
• they were sampled in 1991 or 1992.
2.05-26i September 1994
