• 2.05.4(2)(e)
Collection and Analysis of Cover Data
Cover is estimated using a point-intercept method
along randomly located and oriented transects. Fifty points are
sampled along the 50-meter length transects. One point is sampled
at each meter interval along the transect. Each point is 0.5 meter
from the transect and perpendicular to the transect.
The sighting device is mounted on an adjustable
tripod to facilitate vertical orientation and point stabilization.
Fine cross hairs are used in the sighting device to provide optimum
point definition. At each sample point, the sighting devise is
directed vertically upward if overstory vegetation was present and
then downward into the understory community. The first hit along
a vertical line is recorded as vegetative (by species), rock,
litter or soil. When vegetation is intercepted on the first hit
additional hits are taken until soil, litter or rock was
intercepted. First hits are used in calculating the absolute
percent cover.
n
U
•
2.05-26ii September 1994
