D-6.3.2 Operation
Operations wastes will include typical office wastes and process related waste
materials. The office wastes will include primarily paper, plastic, aluminum cans,
paper sacks and cardboard from boxes. If practical, these wastes will be placed in
specially marked containers for reycling; otherwise they will be placed in covered
dumpsters. The wastes then will be removed from the site by a contract hauler for
recycling or disposal at approved facilities. It will be up to the contract waste hauler
to select appropriate waste disposal sites.
There will be limited process related operations generated wastes. Currently, these
wastes are expected to be cardboard boxes and wooden pallets from delivery of
various materials, supplies and parts; and possibly the previously mentioned
sediment if the evaporation ponds need to be cleaned out. The Colorado
Department of Natural Resources, Division of Minerals and Geology (Colorado
Division of Minerals and Geology (DMG); October, 1995) has not classified this
experimental pilot plant project and other nahcolite mining operations as Designated
Mining Operations (DMOs). Thus, the exemption from Designation means "... that
designated chemicals will not be stored or used on-site for extractive metallurgical
processing, toxic or acid-forming materials will not be exposed or disturbed in
quantities sufficient to adversely affect human health, property or the environment;
and that acid mine drainage ... will not occur as a result of mining operations ..."
The cardboard boxes and wooden pallets which result from operations will be
recycled, if possible. Thus, they will be placed in appropriately marked dumpsters for
a contract waste hauler to remove and dispose of the waste at an acceptable recycle
or disposal site.
Typical dumpsters which will hold waste materials are expected to be approximately
6 feet x 8 feet x 20 feet. It is expected that one dumpster will be removed from the
site each month.
Waste materials also may involve parts which are replaced. These parts will be
returned to the manufacturer for reconditioning and resale, if possible; otherwise they
will be removed for disposal by a contract waste hauler.
G:\LMW\78545.002\Reclamation\Reclamexh.DOC D-52
