The sediment which may need to be removed from the evaporation ponds may
contain wind blown dust, sodium bicarbonate, and water treatment chemical
residues. The latter are expected to possibly be present in small concentrations and
could include calcium and magnesium sulphates, phosphates and carbonates.
Depending on the concentration of sodium bicarbonate in the sediment from the
ponds, the sediment may be reprocessed for these materials. If the sediment has
low concentrations of sodium bicarbonate, it will be removed by a contract hauler for
disposal at an approved site.
As indicated above, nahcolite mining operations are not designated by the CDMG as
DMOs. However, it is expected that prior to any disposal of the sediment from the
evaporation ponds, the sediment will be analyzed by the Toxicity Characteristic
Leaching Procedure (TCLP) Test to determine if any potentially harmful materials are
present. If these materials are found in regulated levels, they will be disposed in
accordance with the then in-effect regulatory requirements.
Other wastes are expected to include approximately 200 gallons per year of waste
oils and 30 gallons per year of laboratory reagents. These wastes will be placed in
appropriate drums and removed from the project site by an appropriately licensed
contract waste hauler for disposal and/or recycling at an approved facility.
D-7 REFERENCES
Cameron, R.A.
