TSF Operations
The TSF is designed to be a non - discharging facility with 3 feet of freeboard. The only purpose
of the spillway is to provide a low spot for emergency release of an event above the PMP
designed event. Exhibits TSF 02, 03 and 05 show a 6in deep, 50ft long spillway dimension.
UMC commitments to the Phase 2 TSF expansion be constructed and operational prior to the
Phase 1 TSF elevation reaching 9722 ft. "
The Phase 1 facility at capacity, prior to Phase 2, will have a load on the polypropylene liner and
clay liner of 28 feet of tailings. The density of the tailings material is approximately 21 cf/st wet.
The maximum Phase 1 load is 5881bs /sf on the polypropylene liner and clay liner. As designed,
the polypropylene liner is in direct contact with the clay liner.
The hydrostatic head on the geomembrane liner will be less than two feet. UMC will
continuously decant the water for reuse in the mill to minimize makeup water requirements.
Typically, tailings will be laid down in a bench, or splay within the impoundment and a barge
mounted decant sump pump(s) located at the lowest level will pump the water back to the mill.
This pump(s) will be pressure sensor activated (or float switch activated).
DUST CONTROL
Dust control of the tailings disposal area is expected to be greatly enhanced by the fact that the
pond area is sheltered by a dense growth of pines and is located on the lee side of a hill which
affords considerable protection.
M1990 -057 September 27, 2011
