Mr. Wallace H. Erickson
Response to August 19, 2011 Cazier Memorandum
September 9, 2011
Page 2
Attachment 3. Based on existing information, approximately 21 steel sets will be
required to stabilize the portal and processing equipment.
Adequacy Issue No. 2.
Page 3 second paragraph, the applicant references Attachment D -3 for rock mechanics
portal repair recommendations for the May Day No. 1 Portal. Attachment D -3 is for
Little Deadwood Gulch May Day No. 2 drainage repair. DRMS could find no
discussion related to rock mechanics portal repair recommendations.
Response to Adequacy Issue No. 2.
Wildcat will correct the identified reference at Page 3, second paragraph, which
should have cited to Attachment D -2 (Portal Collapse Repair Work Plan). Wildcat
discusses rock mechanics portal repair recommendations at Page 4 of Attachment D -2.
Wildcat has confirmed the rock mechanics aspects of this work plan with an outside rock
mechanics consultant from whom it has received a proposal, Agapito Associates, Inc.,
located in Golden, Colorado.
Wildcat will clarify its proposed engineering analysis by modifying the second
paragraph on Page 4 of Attachment D -2, as follows: "To confirm the approach described
above, Wildcat will implement a geotechnical and rock mechanics work plan
consisting of ...."
Wildcat will also add a third bullet to the list of bullets at Page 4 of Attachment
D -2, as follows:
• As necessary based upon preliminary rock mechanics field observations,
obtain appropriate rock sample to perform laboratory analysis of rock
mechanical properties;
Wildcat will also modify the existing third bullet to the list of bullets at Page 4 of
Attachment D -2, as follows:
• Selected samples will be transported for laboratory testing including testing
for rock mechanical properties, moisture content, dry density, strength,
classification, grain -size distribution, and compaction tests;
Wildcat will also modify the fifth sub - bullet under the existing fourth bullet in
the list of bullets at Page 4 of Attachment D -2, as follows:
• Design criteria for steel set foundations (See Figure D -2), including allowable
bearing capacity and ground improvement approaches as necessary, rock
bolting, or other remedial support strategies
DEN 97, 591, 785v2 9 -9 -11
GREENBERG TRAURIG, LLP • ATTORNEYS AT LAW • WWW.GTLAW.COM
