placement. The CQA Monitor shall verify that the anchor trench has been
constructed according to the Drawings. Anchor trenches shall not be
excavated more than seven (7) work days prior to cover liner installation
by Contractor, and shall be backfilled within two (2) days of cover liner
deployment. Seams within limits of the anchor trench do not require
CQC /CQA testing, and backfilling of anchor trenches should not be
delayed for CQC or CQA activities.
Slightly rounded corners shall be provided in the trench where the cover
liner adjoins the trench so as to avoid sharp bends (greater than sixty [60]
degrees) in the cover liner.
B. The anchor trench shall be backfilled and compacted with a method
specification as approved by the Project Manager and Design Engineer.
Anchor trench fill material shall be moisture conditioned, placed In 8- to
12 -inch thick loose lifts, and compacted by wheel rolling with light, rubber -
tired, or other light compaction equipment.
Care shall be taken when backfilling the trenches to prevent any damage
to the cover liner. At no time shall construction equipment come into
direct contact with the cover liner. If damage occurs, it shall be repaired
by the Contractor prior to the completion of backfilling.
3.5 AGGREGATE BASE COURSE
A. Place aggregate base course in a single 4 -inch lift ensuring that the
materials placed are a homogeneous mixture.
B. Compact to a minimum density of 90 percent of maximum per ASTM D
698.
3.6 FIELD QUALITY
A. Tests
1. Give advance notice of at least 24 hours to Engineer when ready
for compaction or subgrade inspection.
2. Notify the Design Engineer prior to commencement of proof rolling
of the foundation.
3. The Design Engineer may perform in -place density, and moisture
content tests to evaluate whether the materials meet requirements
of the Specifications.
4. The Design Engineer may perform gradation and plasticity tests to
evaluate whether the materials meet requirements of the
Specifications.
5. Assist the Design Engineer in obtaining representative samples
for testing.
6. Other tests may be performed as deemed necessary by the
Rio Grande Silver Tailings Evaporation Pond
August 2011
02320 -6
Earthwork
02320
