B. Excavation:
3.2 LINER SUBBASE
remove them for delivery to the custody of the proper State or Federal
authorities. Such excavation will be considered and paid for as extra
work.
1. Unclassified: All excess suitable material excavated from the
project site and not used for embankment shall be removed from
the project site and become the property of the Contractor. Where
material encountered within the limit of the work is considered
unsuitable for embankment material on any portion of this project
work, such material shall be excavated as directed by the
Engineer and replaced with suitable fill material.
A. Liner subbase shall be prepared to the lines and grades as indicated on
the Drawings.
B. Liner subbase shall be installed according to the requirements of Section
02620: Geosynthetic Liner.
C. The surface of the liner subbase material shall be compacted with a
smooth drum roller to create a suitable surface for geosynthetic liner
placement. The subbase liner material shall be compacted at -1 percent
to +2 percent optimum moisture content as determined by ASTM D698
and to a density equal to or greater than 90 percent of the maximum
density as determined by ASTM D 698.
D. The final surface shall be smooth and free of protrusions, ruts, and open
graded material.
E. The final surface is subject to approval by the liner installer and the
Design Engineer prior to placement of the geosynthetic liner.
3.3 BERM FILL
A. Random fill will be placed as noted in the Drawings.
B. Contractor shall moisture condition, place and compact berm fill by a
method compaction technique. The specifics of the method specification,
including the lift thickness, the method of compaction, and degree of
compaction will be dependent of the specific component of the work.
C. Compacted berm fill will be nominally compacted with the intent of
generally achieving a density approximating 90 percent of the ASTM D
698 maximum dry density, with a smooth surface not subject to erosion or
wheel rutting or settlement.
3.4 ANCHOR TRENCH FILL
A. Contractor shall supervise the anchor trench excavation for conformance
to the line, grade, and width shown on the Drawings, prior to liner system
Rio Grande Silver Tailings Evaporation Pond
August 2011
02320 -5
Earthwork
02320
