• o Definitions and limits for no terms: phase, consociation, complex, similar, and
dissimilar were applied as described in the revised Soil Survey Manual , chapter
5-Map Units (1980).
Furthermore, each map unit was fully described and the following items were also
addressed;
o slopes (their length if important and percentages)
o physiography type
o erosion hazard tram wind
o erosion hazard from water
o surface runoff
All mapping units were compared with existing SCS San Miguel Area map units.
As an additional product, ERT has provided PCC with a complete and legible field notebook
that describes the soil characteristics (in an appropriate method of field notation) for
• 52 holes that were dug during the 1987 field mapping. PCC also included field soil
descriptions for the 20 holes Mat were examined during the 1988 field mapping. This
product provides additional site specific information and is valuable for several reasons.
It provides survey-area-wide data beyond the standard point specific sampling data. This
information is valuable for soil series range of characteristics report discussion, as
well as for more specific topsoil suitability evaluations and subsequent topsoil volume
calculations based on percent inclusions as well as major map unit components. It also
provides a written record of field work that can be utilized in any subsequent field
review. The soil observations were sequentially numbered in the field book and plotted on
the 1"400' scale topographic base map.
Map units were delineated on the 1"400' scale black and white aerial photo base map (dated
4-18-86) supplied to ERT by PCC. The legend on the maps includes all map unit symbols and
appropriate component soil series names as well as recommended soil salvage depths.
Soil Sampling and Profile Description. Correspondence concerning CMLRD's review (letter
dated 4-24-87) of the PCC Nucla East baseline soil survey scope-of-work (letter dated
2-20-87) is on file at PCC.
