• Recent 1" = 500' color and color infra-red aerial photographs (6-12-87 and 10-21-87, <br /> respectively) were also utilized in the field mapping. <br /> Mapping detail was at an Order 1 level for the entire PCC Nucla East study area. Order 1 <br /> mapping units consisted primarily of consociations and complexes. Taxonomic units were <br /> soil series and soil families. Phases of soil series were based on factors important to <br /> soil suitability and salvage as well as inherent soil properties. Map unit component <br /> percentages, and the percentages of major soil series inclusions, wore generated during <br /> the mapping phase. The slope categories used for the map units reflect soil suitability <br /> and salvage depth as well as machinery limitations related to topsoil salvage. All <br /> boundaries of mapping units were plotted in the field on the base map utilized for <br /> mapping. <br /> All map units were delineated as follows: <br /> o If soils were dissimilar (i.e., highly contrasting in physical and/or chemical <br /> properties and/or depth of suitable soil), consociations of a minimum size of <br /> • 0.5 acre were delineated. <br /> o If sails were similar (i.e., lowly contrasting in physical and/or chemical <br /> properties and/or depths of suitable soil), consociations of a minimum size of 1 <br /> to 1.5 acres were delineated. <br /> o Soil complexes were mapped when two or more kinds of soil or miscellaneous areas <br /> were in a pattern so intricately mixed that the components could not be <br /> separately delineated at the 1"400' map scale, i.e., the maximum size of mapping <br /> inclusions in similar soils was 1 to 1.5 acres and the maximum size of mapping <br /> inclusions in dissimilar soils was 0.5 acres. <br /> o Map unit descriptions include the site specific percentage of the component <br /> series (and percentages for major inclusions) found in each mapping unit and <br /> reflect the site specific conditions (ranges, variability, associated competing <br /> soils) of the study area. <br /> o All map units were correlated with existing SCS soil series, where possible. <br /> • The SCS has not set up soil series for the Haplaquoll soils.
