RIO BLANCO COUNTY WEED CONTROL
RIO BLANCO COUNTY COURTHOUSE
POST OFFICE BOX 599
MEEKER, COLORADO 81641
303 878-5081
Page 2 - November 16, 1990 - Enron Coal Company
3. It is a known fact that at various times and growth
stages of grasses herbicides will suppress the grass.
There are alot of variances involved here; the type of
grass, the age of the grass, the competative nature of
the grass, moisture or lack of it, and herbicide choice.
Regardless of herbicide choice you will cause some grass
suppression. This year we used Tordon 22K (Picloram) to
treat Leafy Spurge and Thistles. It has been my experience,
when using Picloram at high rates it will actually kill
grass. You are fighting against two evils. One, if you
don't treat the noxious weeds they will take over desirable
plants . Two, if you treat the noxious weeds with
herbicides you will kill some desirable vegetation as well
as suppress some grasses.
Now I would like to address the topic of wildlife
on the reclaimed areas. First, many herbicides make
grasses, forbes, and even noxious weeds more palatable
to wildlife such as elk and deer. As you decrease the
presence of noxious weeds the wildlife will prefer the
grasses in the managed area over roadside grasses and
grasses in the native habitat. So in conclusion it seems
you are between the perverbial rock and hard place in your
endeavor for bond release. It seems to me there will. have
to be some compromise on the part of individuals involved
in the process. I will do everything I can to help you
manage the noxious weeds on your reclaimed areas but I
am also limited by budget, labor, and time.
Sincerely,
Rex Townsley
R.B.C.
