1! I1?
Enron Coal Company
Dear Greg,
RIO BLANCO COUNTY WEED CONTROL
RIO BLANCO COUNTY COURTHOUSE
POST OFFICE BOX 599
MEEKER. COLORADO 81641
303 878.5081
November 16, 1990
I am writing this letter concerning the revegetation
on the Northern 1, Rienau 2, and the Refuse area in the
9 Mile area of Rio Blanco County. The species of noxious
weeds in that area are: Leafy Spruge, Canada Thistle,
Houndstongue, Mullin, and Bull Thistle. I'm sure all of
these weeds were present prior to mining operations. The
9 Mile area has the largest concentration of Leafy Spurge
in the County and as far as I can tell was introduced into
that area in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Disturbance
of the ground always encourages propagation of these noxious
weeds thus the problems you have been encountering in that
area. I would like to address the question of why the
grass on the roadside (highway) look healtier than the
grass and forbes on the reclaimed area. There are several
reasons for this:
1. Noxious perenial weeds such as Leafy Spurge and
Canada Thistle rapidly out compete the grasses and forbes
for water and nutrients in the soil thus suppressing the
growth of desirable vegetation.
2. With the presence of noxious weeds comes the need
for control of those weeds. The best most effective and
expedient way of controlling those weeds at this time is
herbicides. The noxious weeds mentioned above are all
broadleaf plants so are forbes and brushes. Therefore
as you treat noxious weeds you will no doubt kill some
of these forbes therefore reducing desirable vegetation.
Also timing is very critical in treating various noxious
weeds (different optimum times for different weeds).
Therefore, there will always be some missed.
0(01% A- qv
