CM0001755

DESIGN REPORT
NO. 1 DAM IMPOUNDMENT
CLIMAX MINE - CLIMAX, COLORADO
1.0 INTRODUCTION
This document presents the approach and calculations for the No. 1 Dam Impoundment (Dam)
Design for Climax Molybdenum Company's (CMC) Climax Mine in Climax, Colorado. The
purpose of the Dam is to contain impacted No. 1 Dam seep water and prevent commingling of
seep water with clean surface water run-off stored in Robinson Lake located down gradient of the
Dam. The Dam is a zoned earthen dam with a low-permeability inner core and cutoff wall to
contain and direct seep water to the No. 1 Dam Pump Station [designed by W.W. Wheeler and
Associates, (Wheeler)].
In general, the Dam construction work is anticipated to proceed as follows:
• 1. The Chalk Mo tain Re rvoir's clean wat r d' char a which cu ntl di char a int the
un t se a is g, rre y s g s o
Dam area, will be diverted around the Dam into Robinson Lake;
2. Unsuitable Dam foundation soils located below the footprint of the Dam will be excavated
and dewatering controls will be implemented to support placement of engineered fill
materials;
3. The Dam's foundation will be constructed using on-site borrow materials and a low-
permeability cutoff wall (i.e., to minimize foundation seepage underneath the Dam) will be
constructed through the foundation and underlying fractured bedrock zones into competent
bedrock;
4. The Dam will be constructed in three zones - Zone 1 (i.e., the Dam's low permeability inner
core which minimizes seepage through the Dam), Zone 2 (i.e., the Dam's outer core which
buttresses the inner core) and Zone 3 (i.e., the Dam's rock fill which buttresses the outer
core) and riprap will be placed over the outer face of Zone 3;

c:Ulynn\cypm\di aclroldam16104rep2.doc 12103/96
?-?? ?-
-----m
-------
- - - - -Environmental
I
